UNDP Projects in Cayman Islands

A fundamental aspect of risk management and mitigation is to incorporate lessons learnt from past disasters into future actions to reduce vulnerability and manage hazards. In Cayman Islands, the disaster from Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 – which caused nearly US$3.5 billion in damage to the country – provided an opportunity to not only overcome the emergency but also to improve preparedness and resilience to future similar events through hazard mapping and better baseline statistics for socioeconomic assessments.
