The promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women is central to the mandate of UNDP and intrinsic to its development approach. This effort includes advocating for women’s/girls’ and men’s/boy’s equal rights, combatting discriminatory practices and challenging the roles and stereotypes that affect inequalities and exclusion.
Globally, UNDP supports international and national efforts to mainstream gender and women’s empowerment, making women’s and men’s concerns and experiences an integral dimension into all our areas of work guided by our Gender Equality Strategy.
UNDP takes a multidimensional approach to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment as essential aspects of sustainable development. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls), globally, UNDP supports partner countries in focusing directly on advancing gender equality, which includes eliminating all forms of violence against women, recognizing the value of women’s unpaid work and promoting women’s participation in decision-making. UNDP also works to ensure the integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment in initiatives to achieve all the other SDGs.
The rationale for UNDP’s commitment to accelerating the gender equality agenda is based on the mandate to secure the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights of women and men, which several United Nations treaties and instruments affirm. The Government of Jamaica has signed these agreements and established in its own national policy framework the commitment to secure and advance gender equality and women’s human rights.
