SDG CHAMPION PROGRAMME

We are searching for local champions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the global plan to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The SDGs are also integrated into the Vision 2030 Jamaica National Development Plan.

Who are SDG Champions? These are individuals or groups often working quietly, without national or media recognition in various areas of service to communities, in farming, with the poor and the disenfranchised, to right wrongs and injustices, to save our land environment and our seas, to educate the future generations, to innovate new goods and services which are sustainable, or to advocate for energy efficiency and renewable energy and so much more. When you observe their work, their service and their impact, you should be able to make a direct connection to one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Although their work may cover more than one goal, ONE GOAL SHOULD PREDOMINATE.  Visit: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/ for more information on the goals.

Selection:

The SDG Champions will be selected by the SDG National Core Group jointly chaired by the PIOJ and the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).

In considering nominations, the committee may consider persons or organisations that may not have been submitted through the public nomination process.

The committee reserves the right to select more than one person or group to serve as SDG Champions for any stated SDG or to ask selected SDG champion groups to send one representative of the group to select events.

Nominations are scheduled to close at 2 p.m. on Friday June 29 but may remain open at the discretion of the National SDGs Core Group.

The decisions of the committee are final and sealed.

The work of a SDG Champion:

SDG Champions may be invited to participate in promotional events including photo shoots, video productions and events designed to promote or advocate for the SDG.  No remuneration is provided, although travel reimbursement is considered. It must be understood from the outset that participation is a voluntary activity and not for financial gain. The selected SDG Champions will be invited to SDG events, and through their participation, will receive promotion of their work and causes.

Not Eligible for Nomination:

Anyone can put in a nomination, but nominees for SDG Champion cannot be employees or contractors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Statistical Institute of Jamaica, Planning Institute of Jamaica or United Nations agencies operating in Jamaica.
