Profile:

In order to guarantee sustainability a significant part of the programme is focused on capacity development. Another important aspect of the programme is its partnership strategy. UNDP Jamaica’s programme aims to facilitate the development of a joint strategy between government and the private sector to develop sustainable economic opportunities for the target group. Young men are the victims as well as the perpetrators of most violent crimes in Jamaica. The lack of economic opportunities is a key factor. An important focus will be on encouraging businesses to invest in target communities to help generate jobs. Support will then be provided in the target communities for the implementation of context-specific initiatives such as micro credit, skills training and career consulting schemes. In addition to focusing on economic opportunities, these programmes will also include an element that looks at issues of male identity and gender-based violence to help develop more positive models of masculinity amongst this key target group.

Transforming government to deliver for women is a central focus of the programme. Training is to be provided for staff from key government partner ministries on addressing gender issues in policy development and implementation. This is designed to ensure that the development of government policies on community security, restorative justice and small arms control take into account gender dimensions. A study will be conducted into the gender dimensions of armed violence and community security. The community peace and justice centres are designed to help increase women’s access to justice at the local level.
