Objectives

The overall project objective is to create positive linkages between migration and development in Jamaica through increasing the protection and social inclusion of migrants and their families. The specific objective of the project is to reduce the negative impact of migration on multi-generational households in Jamaica by increasing their access to information, services and entitlements and reducing their socio-economic exclusion.

Expected Results

The project seeks to improve policies and programmes to assist migrants and their families in Jamaica through increased awareness of policy makers and other stakeholders of migrants rights and the impact of migration on poor multi-generational households; improve protection of multi-generational households affected by migration through access to information and inter-generational activities and improve access of multi-generational households affected by migration to services, income and livelihood opportunities.

Profile:

The project targets members of MGHs affected by migration in the inner-city communities of Rose Town, Greenwich Town and Whitfield Town in Kingston. These communities are characterized by large families, poor housing conditions, low income residents and a high level of crime and violence. The total population of the three communities is approximately 22,000. Roughly one-third of the poorest are members of MGHs. The project targets 1,500 households with a population of 7,500. An innovative aspect of this project is that it addresses challenges faced by the social unit or family of which children are a part, where previous and current efforts to deal with the impact of migration on families focus exclusively on children.
