Objectives

The main objective of this project is to enhance effective sustainable land management (SLM) by building capacities for SLM into government planning and strategy development.

Expected Results

  • SLM is mainstreamed into national institutions, policies and strategies and plans
  • Capacity for management, application and adaptation of SLM is enhanced
  • Effective Management and adaptive learning is achieved.

Profile:

The Ministry of Land and Environment in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture’s Forestry Department will conduct an assessment of the major factors causing land degradation in Jamaica, including socio-economic issues, drought assessment, and policy and legislation relating to land degradation. The process will include consultation with relevant stakeholders through workshops and focus groups. From this assessment a project proposal for a MSP to build capacity to mitigate land degradation and to achieve SLM will be prepared and submitted to the GEF through UNDP.
