UNDP supports hurricane recovery in Bahamas
|

In September UNDP announced the release of an initial allocation of $200,000 USD of emergency funding in response to the devastating impact of category five hurricane Dorian on The Bahamas. Support was committed for Debris and waste management; Housing and Building Damage Assessments; and a National Recovery Strategy.

UNDP supports training in innovative assessment tool

Team members from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Public Works (MOPW) of The Bahamas being trained in the use of UNDP's Building Damage Assessment (BDA) tool kit by UNDP team members. The toolkit facilitates rapid assessment using an online questionnaire on mobile devices that provide real-time geo-referenced reports. Prior to the use of the BDA methodology, building damage assessments were paper-based processes that could take months, even years

Solar Panels installed at May Pen Hospital to save J$3.5 million on energy bills
|

Three solar generating systems valued at US$186 000 are being installed at the May Pen hospital with expected reductions of 3.5 million JMD per annum. Up to September 2019 solar panels had been installed in the nurses quarter under a Project funded by UNDP through the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the UNDP in partnership with the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica and the Development Bank of Jamaica. The panels will inject power into the hospital’s electricity network. With the expected reduction in energy bills, the Hospital through the Ministry of Health and Wellness will be able to utilize monetary savings to further improve healthcare services at the hospital. The Administration Building and the Solar Pergola are slated to be completed by the end of 2019. The nurses quarters was completed in September.

Jamaica's first Witness Care Conference staged at the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is funded by Global Affairs Canada under the Justice Undertakings for Social Transformation (JUST) project implemented by Government of Jamaica and UNDP..

The Government of Jamaica's first Witness Care Conference in July 2019 networked practitioners in social work, prosecution, law enforcement and court administration. In the post conference period they will join forces to advance witness care in Jamaica.

Three Jamaicans sponsored by UN and UNDP attend first ever UN Youth Climate Summit
|

The UNDP-implemented Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership sponsored two Jamaicans to attend the Youth Climate Summit on September 21 . The Jamaicans are Michael Morgan, Media and Communications Director, Caribbean Youth Environment Network and Jhannel Tomlinson, Ph.D. candidate blogger and Commonwealth Correspondent for Global Young Voices. They joined another Jamaican, Climate Activist, Dainalyn Swaby who was sponsored by the United Nations as one of 100 outstanding young climate champions around the world to have been awarded ‘Green Tickets’ to the summit.

Representative appointed to Belize

Denise E. Antonio, recently appointed UNDP Resident Representative for Jamaica, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Turks and Caicos Islands, has also been appointed to serve as Resident Representative for Belize. Ms. Antonio, who operates from the Kingston country office, visited Belize on mission from 22 to 26 July where she met with government officials, UNDP Belize and UN Resident Coordinator teams as well as other UN agencies.

On December 9 UNDP Jamaica joins the global UNDP family in unveiling the Human Development Report 2019. The country office will disclose Jamaica's standings on the Human Development Index, including benchmarks such as, Gross National Income per capita, years of schooling, the multi dimensional poverty index and the gender equality index.

UNDP launches Social Media Townhall series

UNDP Jamaica launched the first in its series of social media town halls on World Ozone Day, 16 September The first town hall featured a distinguished panel and a live studio audience. Panelists included William Tavares Finson of Seal Sprayed Solutions, Vivian Blake, National Ozone Officer and Dane Rookwood, AC and refrigeration technician. The live event was addressed by UNDP Resident Representative Denise E Antonio.
