ANNOUNCEMENT

2019 Human Development Report Launch Part 2

Matthew McHayle, UWI Student and Model UN Delegate

I am happy to be here this morning to participate in the launch and unveiling of the 2019 Human Development Report. As a student of the Social Sciences, the HDR is a valued reference book for supporting our understanding and application of development concepts and policies. I am interested in learning more and doing more with the wealth of data presented, especially the indices related to inequality. Students of the University of the West Indies Mona campus, under the guidance of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies will join forces with the United Nations Development Programme in Jamaica to plan a Human Development Report part 2 on 30 January 2020.

Our HDR In-depth event will be one day of exploration of the HDR’s development indices on Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean. We want to take time to study the data and to discuss the best ways that our nations can advance development fairly and equitably without leaving anyone behind.

As students of development we have a mission and a voice which we intend to use. We consider our January HDR In-depth event an excellent platform to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing discussion on sustainable development and growth. The HDR provides the evidence we need to make a start. As we students get ready to advance plans for this event in partnership with SALISES and UNDP we are confident that we can make a difference and that our voices will be heard. Stay tuned for more from us in January when we move our plans into higher gear. Many thanks to UNDP and to SALISES for this opportunity. I thank you.
