CHILD MONTH MESSAGE

for United Nations Association of Jamaica

By Denise E Antonio, UNDP Resident Representative

Greetings children and young people.  Consistent with your theme for Child Month “Unplug Negativity, Connect Positivity and Think”, allow me to say a few words to you, our future leaders.

Our world is facing unprecedented times and with COVID-19, we are being ushered into unchartered waters. Like many of us, I am sure you have a lot questions.  How you choose to respond to this crisis will make a difference in the path you take for your future: you can either choose to be scared, unfocused and uncaring or you can choose to be bold; deliberate with your time and determined to make a difference. As future leaders, you will have the responsibility to lead your nation and to advance the welfare of humanity.

Here are some practical suggestions that can guide you: If you like to use the internet, as most young people do, search for the wealth of resources that can support your goals. Make use of free online webinars, courses, resources and approved networks. Write down your goals and the steps you need to take to realize them.  When online, remember there are dangers, so please, do not reveal your identity and location, and do not arrange to meet strangers. Walk home in groups and travel only in licensed transportation or with people you know. Human trafficking is a very real and present threat and so too is abuse. If you are experiencing abuse or know someone who is being abused, reach out to the local hotlines to report or seek counselling, and do not be afraid.  Unplug yourselves from these possibilities by being smart and wise in the choices you make every single day. You are never too young to demand for positive change. There is no age requirement for having a caring heart.

But don’t forget about you. Remember this is also your time to focus on your well-being and personal development. Sometimes, you just need to unplug entirely from the internet. Purchase or borrow books about people, places and issues and challenge yourself out of your comfort zone.  Take time to rest, laugh and talk with family and friends. I encourage you to see this time as an extraordinary opportunity to grow, to heal and to persevere. As you pursue your dreams, always pause to think through your choices and the consequences each brings. I hope you will always choose to turn away from anything that threatens the powerful role you are destined to play in your country and the world and that you will always boldly choose  a pathway of positivity. I wish you all the best.
